Wow! Can you believe the first quarter is almost over! (Well, for Track 3 at least!) I'm both excited by the progress and in disbelief of how quickly we fly through the weeks. Here is an update of the projects that we're working on: Kindergarten has been talking about the parts of a book and making a book all about the elements of art. Each page has a new theme and will include: Line, Shape, Color, Texture, Form, Value and Space. Our First Graders have been looking at the work of illustrator Eric Carle and talking about primary colors, collage and the parts of a bug! They have been busy making their own adorable bugs and putting them in a habitat with a foreground and a background. Check it out! The lively Second Graders have been working on talking about drawing positive and negative space around numbers looking at the work of American painter Jasper Johns. We are using primary colors to paint these numbers! The creative Third Graders are working on starting a paper sculpture unit. We have talked about the difference between 2-Dimensional works (like paintings and drawings) and 3-Dimensional works (like sculptures). We are experimenting with a variety of techniques to use paper as a 3-Dimensional medium. We looked at artists such as Alexander Calder who use abstract shapes for sculptures (see below). The innovative Fourth Graders are just starting a project all about symmetry and imagination. We have looked at the work of North Carolina folk artist Minnie Evans and discussed the symmetry and vibrant colors in her paintings. The students will be using their imaginations to come up with their own symmetrical masterpiece. And finally, the talented Fifth Graders are stretching their brains by taking on the challenge of drawing their hands. The students are using the ASL alphabet to spell out and draw their initials. This project is a good exercise in looking at the negative space around your subject and challenges students to connect your eyes with your pencil. So far I'm impressed!
