We have been lucky to have mosaic artist Jeannette Brossart work with us as our artist in residence this year! Mrs. Brossart came up with a design that the fourth grade students have been working on for a collaborative mosaic piece that will hang in the halls at Ballentine. Here are some pictures from today. I am very excited for the finished product! Students learned about the history of mosaics and then worked in groups of 3-4 to complete a piece of the mosaic. The last photo is our progress so far!

And just like that we're in a new school year! To kick things off all Ballentine students have contributed to a collaborative installation in the hallway of flowers inspired by the illustrator Lisa Congdon. Each day I'm adding more and more flowers as we finish them! Our third, fourth and fifth graders have been working hard at making their very own sketchbooks to use in the art room!
Looking back over the last year there are a lot of things that I know I will do again, and a lot of things I will do differently. I am reorganizing the room to be more kid-friendly and I am very excited for all of the artwork to come!
As I prepare, I've created a wishlist of items that would be great to have in the art room!
Track 2 4th grade spent some time drawing in the garden today. We talked about using our observational drawing skills to draw the plants and sculptures. It was relaxing and they were successful! It's finally here! We've started clay in fifth grade! Track 1 kiddos were able to complete their mini bust sculptures before I track out. Here is a sneak peek: We looked at the American artist Robert Arnerson to inspire this project. He did many funky portraits in clay, like this one! And here is what they came up with. They are very creative! And, taking a peak at the first grader's work, we have been reading Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are and looking at the beautiful artwork to make our own 'wild things' using chalk pastel: Our curious kindergarteners have been learning to work with clay. We read Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak and came up with these kooky monsters! The third grade artists have been learning about American painter Wayne Thiebaud and his love for painting items from popular culture, including delicious looking food! Like these two! Some of the Kinders and 1st grade classes have been learning about the swimming pool paintings of David Hockney. We will be using a watercolor resist to make our people look like they are floating in a warm summer pool! Here is one of Hockney's paintings: Track 1 5th grade has done a nice job on finishing up their Robert Arneson miniature sculptures:
In Kindergarten (T3) we've been doing a unit on self portraits and figuring out the sizes of the body parts. We started with drawings and then moved on to modelling clay! These little clay 'people' sure are fun to make. Many of the k-3 classes have also read Rechenka's Eggs by Patricia Polacco and looked at beautiful Russian and Ukrainian painted eggs (like these) to inspire our own egg patterns: And in Ms. Wall's class students are creating wire sculptures of different endangered birds that they are researching. They are still in progress, but here is my little example: 5th Grade (T3) started printmaking their American capital cityscapes! It is very process-intensive but they were up for the challenge! In other news, the Art by Me artworks were shipped yesterday after much delay from snow days and field trips! More info to come from the PTA soon!
Students excelled in creating their own four-panel cartoons while working with professional cartoon artist Dave McDonald. Here are a few images of our time with the artist in residence:
The fourth graders are getting excited about working with our very own Artist in Residence this week!
In partnership with the United Arts Council and our own Cultural Arts programming, we have invited a visiting artist to work with the fourth graders for a total of 3 contact hours per student this week. We are excited to welcome cartoon artist Dave McDonald to the art room to work on drawing (and writing!) our very own cartoons. Stay tuned for images of what we come up with! You can check out Dave's background and work here. Here is one of his latest cartoons: |
