I'm excited to announce that the PTA is coordinating a fundraiser in partner with 'Art By Me'! Art by Me is a North Carolina-based company that provides parents with the opportunity to purchase products printed with their child's artwork. Look for a flyer in the coming weeks. In the mean time, we'll be working hard on making the beautiful masterpieces! 5th Grade will be collaging Spirit Animal Molas in the style of Cuna Molas from the San Blas Islands: Our Carolinian 4th Graders will be practicing working with watercolor washes and collaging to make images of North Carolina lighthouses. Our unique 3rd Graders will be working on self portraits with lots of fun patterns to fill the background. 1st & 2nd Grade will be working on designing and painting their own garden after learning about parts of the plant and what they do for the plant. And our Kinders will be imagining up their very own dream home and painting it with vibrant colors. What would your dream home be?
Congratulations to the artists in the Fuquay Varina Community Arts Festival! I was very excited to see our artwork along side of artwork from other area schools:
Here are some updates from the classroom: Kindergarten discussed patterns and looked at beautiful Nigerian cloths to inspire our own stamp patterns. Ms. Wall's class completed their landscapes made from recycled materials and spent some time reflecting on their artwork and artwork of their classmates: Here is one example of the final project: Some of the second graders have looked at artwork of Joan Miro (pictured below) and have begun their own oil pastel painting of abstract lines and shapes.
I have entered artwork from each grade level into the Fuquay Varina Woman's Club Arts Festival!
Congratulations to the following artists: K: Katelyn Bowman (Ms. Harte's Class) 1st: Hailey Rhoden (Ms. Bass's Class) 1st: Rebecca Roorda (Ms. Doty's Class) 2nd: Megan Perry (Ms. Williams Class) 3rd: Hannah and Sarah Retzlaff (Ms. S. Knott's Class) 4th: Reagan Bleichner (Ms. Wall's Class) 5th: Elizabeth Denise (Ms. Ohms' Class) All students and their parents are invited to the ARTS FESTIVAL at Windsor Point Auditorium on January 17th and 18th from 1:00-4:00. Refreshments will be served! Third graders working collaboratively to plan their mobile inspired by Alexander Calder: In Fifth grade we are learning about Printmaking. Mrs. Martin's class starting their glue prints for our State Capitals Cityscapes project: In Ms. Harris' kindergarten class we talked about our 5 senses and how we can be inspired by listening to music while we draw, just as Wassily Kandinsky was inspired by music. So we listened to different styles of music and noticed the differences in our drawings: Ms. Wall's Fourth Grade Class is continuing their North Carolina landscapes using recycled materials:
A quick holiday project about Tiffany stained glass with 4th grade: Second graders working on drawing emotions of the face: Fourth graders making progress on Minnie Evans drawings: A first grader working on an Eric Carle bug collage: Fifth graders working on drawing their American Sign Language initials: Fourth graders starting their recycled landscape projects: First grade working on making variety in their underwater seascapes after reading Hooray for Fish!: One of the third grader's mobiles inspired by Alexander Calder: Some of our Kinders working on self portraits:
Wow! Can you believe the first quarter is almost over! (Well, for Track 3 at least!) I'm both excited by the progress and in disbelief of how quickly we fly through the weeks. Here is an update of the projects that we're working on: Kindergarten has been talking about the parts of a book and making a book all about the elements of art. Each page has a new theme and will include: Line, Shape, Color, Texture, Form, Value and Space. Our First Graders have been looking at the work of illustrator Eric Carle and talking about primary colors, collage and the parts of a bug! They have been busy making their own adorable bugs and putting them in a habitat with a foreground and a background. Check it out! The lively Second Graders have been working on talking about drawing positive and negative space around numbers looking at the work of American painter Jasper Johns. We are using primary colors to paint these numbers! The creative Third Graders are working on starting a paper sculpture unit. We have talked about the difference between 2-Dimensional works (like paintings and drawings) and 3-Dimensional works (like sculptures). We are experimenting with a variety of techniques to use paper as a 3-Dimensional medium. We looked at artists such as Alexander Calder who use abstract shapes for sculptures (see below). The innovative Fourth Graders are just starting a project all about symmetry and imagination. We have looked at the work of North Carolina folk artist Minnie Evans and discussed the symmetry and vibrant colors in her paintings. The students will be using their imaginations to come up with their own symmetrical masterpiece. And finally, the talented Fifth Graders are stretching their brains by taking on the challenge of drawing their hands. The students are using the ASL alphabet to spell out and draw their initials. This project is a good exercise in looking at the negative space around your subject and challenges students to connect your eyes with your pencil. So far I'm impressed!
Hello! Thanks for taking the time to stop by! My name is Hannah Jennings Murphy, and this is my first year teaching art here at Ballentine Elementary. A quick bio before I give a status update for the classroom: I grew up in beautiful and artsy Winston-Salem, North Carolina. I moved to rural Western New York to get my undergraduate degree in Fine Arts at Houghton College, and shortly after got my MST degree from RIT (Rochester, NY) in Art Education. I am very excited to be learning the ropes of teaching at Ballentine! These first three weeks have been quite the whirlwind in the art room! I've done my best to dive right in and start the students on projects. Here is what we're working on (and what you can ask your kids about!): Kindergarten & 1st Grade: We are making paper collages out of shapes inspired by the artist Henri Matisse (see below). 2nd Grade: We are learning about Wassily Kandinsky and are making concentric circles using pastel and tempera paint. (Mostly to help decorate my doorway!) 3rd & 4th Grade: We are tapping into the endless imagination and creativity of our artist minds to draw our very own robot. We will then be adding darks and lights to give value to our robot. We looked at the creative industries and the artists that made Wall-E! 5th Grade: And last, but not least, the fifth graders are talking all about composition and how typography can communicate different styles. We will be digging into our inner graphic designer to design our own yearbook cover (or magazine cover or cereal box if they've already completed this project).
