Hello! Thanks for taking the time to stop by! My name is Hannah Jennings Murphy, and this is my first year teaching art here at Ballentine Elementary. A quick bio before I give a status update for the classroom: I grew up in beautiful and artsy Winston-Salem, North Carolina. I moved to rural Western New York to get my undergraduate degree in Fine Arts at Houghton College, and shortly after got my MST degree from RIT (Rochester, NY) in Art Education. I am very excited to be learning the ropes of teaching at Ballentine! These first three weeks have been quite the whirlwind in the art room! I've done my best to dive right in and start the students on projects. Here is what we're working on (and what you can ask your kids about!): Kindergarten & 1st Grade: We are making paper collages out of shapes inspired by the artist Henri Matisse (see below). 2nd Grade: We are learning about Wassily Kandinsky and are making concentric circles using pastel and tempera paint. (Mostly to help decorate my doorway!) 3rd & 4th Grade: We are tapping into the endless imagination and creativity of our artist minds to draw our very own robot. We will then be adding darks and lights to give value to our robot. We looked at the creative industries and the artists that made Wall-E! 5th Grade: And last, but not least, the fifth graders are talking all about composition and how typography can communicate different styles. We will be digging into our inner graphic designer to design our own yearbook cover (or magazine cover or cereal box if they've already completed this project).
